Produced in collaboration with the Welsh National Opera, the first Emirati opera was created under the Expo 2020 theme âConnecting Minds, Creating the Futureâ and will feature more than 100 artists and musicians from around the world.
The show runs from December 16 to 19 and is composed by Mohammed Fairouz, co-written by Maha Gargash, directed by Sir David Pountney and directed by Justin Brown.
âCelebrating Expo 2020’s collaborative vision, Al Wasl Opera brings together many people from diverse artistic backgrounds to create a single art form – and there is nothing more universal than opera and theater. If people can laugh and cry together, then anything is possible between them, âsaid Mr. Fairouz.
The opera house takes its name, Al Wasl, from the old name of Dubai. It also translates to âthe connectionâ in English, which fits the Expo 2020 theme perfectly.
âThe story of Al Wasl begins in the desert, and we have created a rather original way of representing this desert in a metaphorical way,â said Sir Pountney.
âIn the middle of the act, we are in the present, where there is a strong reference to the creation of the Burj Khalifa, and we move into the future in the final act, where we are in pure fantasy land on this that the future may or may not look like, depending on whether or not we commit to a sustainable future. â
Al Wasl Opera will be presented in English, lasting 120 minutes, including an intermission. Tickets start from 300 Dh and are available on the Dubai Opera website.
