BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – The day after Black Friday isn’t just your average Saturday, it’s a chance for people to get out and do some local shopping as the holiday season begins. The Beckley Art Center held its holiday gift shop opening day on November 27, 2021 to kick off the holiday shopping season.
“We get as many Appalachian artists as possible into a room at lower and more accessible prices, like freebies. So we’re just celebrating the holidays and the giveaway season with the gift of art, ”said Saja Montague, Administrative Coordinator of the Beckley Art Center.
Montague said it was one of the largest gift shops with works by more than 70 artists from the Appalachian region. She added that it’s more important than ever to support local artists and small businesses after the lack of sales and creative opportunities available during the pandemic.
“It really makes people think about how many small businesses and small creators have really struggled over the past two years,” Montague said. “It is therefore more important than ever to support small businesses and to reinvest money in our communities. “
Montague said supporting local businesses and artists gives people the chance to find something unique for the perfect holiday gift.
“I think art is very important because it tells a story and you can look at a piece of art that you’ve never seen before and really feel something about it,” Montague said. “So I think the gift of art is very important, it’s very intimate and it’s exciting. “
If you haven’t had the chance to find the perfect holiday gift yet, the gift shop will be open Tuesday through Saturday until December 18, 2021.
